Temper Theatre brings East Anglian tale to Norfolk as HOME returns to the Fens

Following an international tour in China, Temper Theatre are bringing their highly acclaimed production HOME to Norwich for the first time.

Inspired by the at-risk marshlands across East Anglia, this heart-warming and urgent production explores our relationships with lost lands. Drawing from the personal experiences of Artistic Director Finn Morrell, HOME uses Temper Theatre’s signature combination of physical movement and innovative staging to confront climate change and investigate themes of belonging, memory and relocation.

Addressing the urgency around environmental issues and climate change, HOME uses the landscape of East Anglia’s Fenlands as a foundation for this compelling journey battling the elements and time. Drained centuries ago, and now an agricultural region rich with varied ecosystems, these lands face a monumental risk of flooding. Following the central character’s evocative journey through memories and marshes, HOME sees Imogen return to her childhood home, confronting vivid visions of a haunted bygone wilderness to reconnect with the beauty and hope that lies beyond the tangled recollections of our pasts.

Returning to his own childhood home in East Anglia, Finn Morrell found his relationship with the transformative lands a profound inspiration for HOME and the strength in reconnecting with your roots. He comments, I am thrilled to bring HOME to Norwich for the first time. This city, rich in history and community spirit, feels like the perfect place to share a story so close to my heart. The people of Norwich know all too well the impact of flooding—a force that shapes our landscapes and lives. HOME was inspired by my unexpected journey back to the Fens, a place I once saw as a dead-end swamp. Returning to help my family move, I was overwhelmed by emotions that transformed my understanding of what "home" truly means. The familiar flatlands became a vibrant waterland filled with history and stories. Through this production, I hope to shine a new light on universal feelings of home, friendship, family, and the power of community. I hope it will resonate with you and inspire reflection on your own connections to the places and people that shape your life

Founded in 2014, this year marks a decade of innovative work from Temper Theatre.
