Amol Rajan considered if England was best place for his children to grow up - who is his wife and how many kids do they have?

As Amol Rajan questions if England is the best place for his children to grow up - here’s who he is married to and how many kids they have together.

Host of University Challenge, Amol Rajan, has revealed he questioned whether England is the “right place” to bring up his children, saying there are “some big, big problems that need addressing”. Born in Calcutta in India, the journalist and BBC presenter came to England with his family when he was three years old.

Speaking on Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast Amol spoke of his love of England, passed down from his father who he said was fascinated by the country from a young age. Speaking about the opportunities he received by moving here, he said: “You know, I've had this life, to speak for myself, where I went to an amazing school in South London. I went to the world's greatest university and I had three incredible years. I worked at the Foreign Office, I've worked at the BBC, I've worked in Fleet Street. I mean, the dream that my parents had has come true.”

However the 42-year-old also spoke of his concerns about England, saying: “I'm very, very worried about the state of things in my country. I think we've got some big, big, big problems that really need addressing. And one of the things that I worry about in that context is whether or not this is the best place for my four kids to grow up. My answer is it is.”

Who is Amol Rajan married to and how many children do they have?

In September 2013, Amol married the academic Charlotte Faircloth, in Cambridge. Charlotte is Professor of Family and Society at University College London’s Social Research Institute with her work focussing on parenting, gender and reproduction exploring infant feeding, couple relationships, intergenerational relations and, recently, the impact of coronavirus on family life.

She also regularly provides expert commentary to media outlets including BBC News, Channel 4 News, Newsnight, The Times and The Guardian. Amol and Charlotte now live in London and have four children together.

During the podcast, asked by Gyles if he would like his children to “end up in India”, Amol responded: “So I've got a thing. My youngest is two and has just started nursery and is very unhappy today, so I'm feeling rather emotionally worn by it, but when she's a bit older and the long-haul flights are a bit less perilous I'd like to go to India frequently and invite my children to fall in love with the civilization that's that's in their blood.”
