BBC star Matt Baker has opened up about a serious injury he sustained during a pantomime performance, saying that he continues facing challenges in his journey to recovery.

The former The One Show host was performing in Goldilocks and the Three Bears when a stunt involving chairs went wrong, leaving him with a painful herniated disc.

The accident occurred when the chairs, part of an onstage stunt, weren’t secured properly, causing Baker to fall and land on his coccyx. Despite months of rehabilitation, the 46-year-old continues to struggle with the aftereffects of the injury.

Speaking to The Sun, the ex-gymnast detailed his ongoing recovery process. "It's a pain, it's really challenging to get back and get fully fit again," Baker said. "I'm still like really... yeah, it's really tough. I'm just trying to do rehab all the time and stretch and do strength training exercises."

Despite the setback, Baker has returned to television, recently launching a new series of Travels With Mum and Dad on More4, where he journeys across the UK with his parents.

In addition to his return to TV, Baker hinted at the possibility of rejoining The One Show, four years after stepping down as co-host. In light of Jermaine Jenas' recent departure from the show, Baker told The Sun, "All of the shows that I've worked on over the years, even like Blue Peter especially, you leave the show but you don't leave the family."

Baker added: "If they needed me, then I'm more than happy to have a chat with them and see how I can be helpful." Although no official discussions have taken place, Baker said the show has a special place in his heart.

He said: "I spent nine years of my life dedicated to it, and it's a show that's very close to my heart," he said. "It's a family, and you never leave the family."
