While David Walliams has found fame through his television career and children’s books, he has also courted controversy.

David Walliams is one of the UK’s most famous faces. Rising to fame through comedy sketch shows, he became a household name as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent and has even become a favourite with the younger generations through his children’s books.

Despite the TV star’s obvious success he has continuously courted controversy throughout his career - from the notorious ‘Hide The Sausage’ sketch which sees the comedian forcefully removing unexpecting audience members’ underwear and exposing their buttocks and genitals, to backlash against comedy series Little Britain for the use of ‘blackface’ in a number of sketches.

More recently Walliams hit the headlines after a transcript of a private conversation made while filming Britain’s Got Talent was leaked in November 2022 where he was reported to have referred to one contestant as a “c***” and saying of another, “she thinks you want to f*** her, but you don’t”. He apologised for making “disrespectful comments” and in January the following year it was confirmed he had left the ITV talent show.

The comedian, who appeared on the programme between 2012 and 2022, attempted to sue the makers of BGT for misuse of private information and for breaching UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act. In November 2023, a spokesperson for the company said: “We are pleased that we have achieved an amicable resolution of this dispute with David. We are sincerely sorry that his private conversations when a judge on Britain’s Got Talent were published, and the great distress this caused David.”

David Walliams’ wife

In 2009, Walliams began dating Dutch model Lara Stone, getting engaged to be married the following year. The pair tied the knot in May 2010 at central London's Claridge's Hotel and three years later, Stone gave birth to the couple's only child, Alfred.

They lived together in Noel Gallagher’s former home, known as Supernova Heights in Belsize Park, North London. After five years of marriage, in March 2015, it was reported the couple had a trial separation after "drifting apart" and in September the same year, Walliams filed for divorce, citing "unreasonable behaviour".

David Walliams has a reported net worth of around £17 million but with reported earnings of close to £15m from his first five books alone, it is likely to be much more than that.
