It was a sweep at the 95th Academy Awards for existential action film Everything Everywhere All At Once, with the film picking up Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and a sentimental win for Michelle Yeoh - becoming the first actress of Asian origin to win the Best Actress gong.

In her acceptance speech, Michelle Yeoh made an impassioned call for women of a certain age not to give up on acting roles. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dream big, and dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anyone ever tell you you are past your prime … thank you to the academy, this is history in the making.”

Dreams were also a central part of Ke Huy Quan’s acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor, telling the Oscars audience, “Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive. Thank you so much for welcoming me back.”

In a feel-good affair at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, one desperately needed after the fallout from the 2022 Oscar ceremony, another crowd favourite also saw his comeback to Hollywood complete as Brendan Fraser picked up the Best Actor award, defeating another favourite - Austin Butler. In his acceptance speech, Fraser thanked “Darren [Aronofski] for throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard the good ship The Whale. It was written by Samuel D. Hunter, who is our lighthouse.”

“Gentlemen, you laid your whale-sized hearts bare so that we could see into your souls like no one else could do and it is my honour to be named alongside you in this category,” he remarked about the other Best Actor nominees, including Elvis’ star Austin Butler.

It wasn’t a particularly good night for Baz Luhrmann’s celebrated biopic, which failed to land any awards in its respective categories, however foreign language film All Quiet On The Western Front exceeded expectations by winning not only the Best Foreign Film but scooping awards in the fields of Best original score, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

Other notable moments from the ceremony included Elizabeth Banks presenting an award with the star of her latest directorial effort Cocaine Bear.

“I recently directed the film Cocaine Bear and without visual effects, this is what the bear would look like,” she quipped before revealing the winner of the Best visual effects award. “Are you trying to score? Why can’t you wait for the afterparty like everyone else?”
