The actor has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic on the musician’s life. During the production and development of the film, Butler immersed himself in the role, studying as much as possible with the help of Elvis’ only daughter.

While Butler was working on the Elvis film he said Presley even opened up parts of the mansion to him that most outsiders never see, including Elvis’ bedroom. Butler said: “I’ve never had an experience where I met somebody and felt an immediate depth of relationship to them.”

Butler added: “She was a person who didn’t really have anything to prove and wouldn’t open up to everybody, and she just opened up to me, and we got so close, so fast. So, yeah, it’s just devastating.”

He spoke to Fallon about seeing Elvis’ bedroom for the first time. Saying: “[I] get goosebumps. That was after we screened the film and the bedroom, you know, his bedroom is a place that most people never get to see. And she said, ‘I want to show you something.’ And she took me up there we just sat in his bedroom. And up there, he’s not Elvis, he was just dad, you know?” He added: “And so, to hear those stories, I truly will treasure that forever.”

Lisa Marie was seen just days before her death at the Golden Globes in support of the multi-nominated biopic on her father’s life. On the red carpet she told journalists what she thought of the biopic when she joined frontman Austin Butler’s interview with Entertainment Tonight.

Presley said: "I really didn’t know what to do with myself after I saw it," she recalled of Baz Luhrmann’s blockbuster biopic. "I had to take, like, five days to process it because it was so incredible and so spot on and just so authentic that, yeah, I can’t even describe what it meant."

Lisa Marie told ET ahead of the Golden Globes that she was there "to support Austin and Baz and the film. I’m so excited, and I hope he wins." Butler ultimately went on to win the award, and during his acceptance speech.

Butler recently received his first Academy Award nomination for his role in the film, and called it ‘bittersweet’ due to Lisa Marie’s tragic death. He told Fallon: “It’s weird in moments like this, because it’s so bittersweet.

He continued: “I mean, so much great stuff is happening, but it’s really … I’m just devastated for her family and for her to not be here celebrating with us. Just to get to be with her at the Golden Globes, like, I’ll never forget that for the rest of my life.”
