A German-language film, an American actor and Australian actress came up on top at the 2023 British Academy Film and Television Awards.

The best and the brightest of film and television gathered at the Royal Festival Hall for the 76th Baftas, which saw Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond at the helm as co-hosts, and Prince William and Kate Middleton attending in the audience.

Before the ceremony, the Bafta CEO detailed the 'extraordinary' range of nominees, and in light of this, PeopleWorld took a look at the winners on the night, and the respective nominations in each category including best actor and actress, and best film of 2023:

Adapted Screenplay

EGOT winner Viola Davis presented the 'Adapted Screenplay' award to German-language Netflix film 'All Quiet on the Western Front', who beat out fellow nominees She Said, Living, The Whale and The Quiet Girl.

Best Supporting Actress

For Best Supporting Actress, The Banshees of Inisherin's Kerry Condon came out on top. Other nominees included Carey Mulligan, Dolly De Leon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett and Hong Chau.

Best Supporting Actor

The luck of the Irish continued as Barry Keoghan clinched the 2023 Bafta for his role in Banshees of Inisherin. His co-star Brendan Gleeson was up for the category too alongside Ke Huy Quan, Michael Ward, Eddie Redmayne, Albrecht Schuch.

Out of Mandy Walker for Elvis, Greig Fraser for the Batman, Claudio Miranda for Top Gun: Maverick, Roger Deakins for Empire of Light and James Friend for Netflix's All Quiet on the Western Front, it was the latter nominee that won the 2023 Bafta.

Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director or producer

While most awards are open to all nationalities, the Baftas have a category for an outstanding debut by a British producer, writer or director, which this year was won by Aftersun's Charlotte Wells.

Animated Film

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and Turning Red were all up for the animated film category, but hot off the back of their Golden Globe win, Guillermo del Toro and his crew were announced as the winners.

Original Screenplay

Brian Cox and Hayley Atwell presented best original screenplay which saw The Banshees of Inisherin come out on top. Martin McDonagh was up against Tar, Triangle of Sadness, The Fablemans and Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Special Visual Effects

James Cameron's much anticipated sequel Avatar 2: The Way of Water was announced as the winner of the 2023 Bafta for special visual effects. Other nods were given to Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, All Quiet on the Western Front and Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Bafta Fellowship Award

A special award given every year at the British Academy Film and Television Awards is the 'Fellowship Award' which is a lifetime achievement. This year's recipient is British costume designer Sandy Powell, who was acknowledged by Martin Scorcese, Olivia Colman and Julianne Moore and presented by Cate Blanchett.

Sandy Powell has designed costumes for the likes of Wolf of Wall Street, Mary Poppins Returns, Carol and Cinderella.

Best British Film

Out of a long-list of nominations, The Banshees of Inisherin were named as Bafta's Best British Film of 2023. In Martin McDonagh's acceptance speech he joked that although most of his cast and crew were Irish, crucial elements of the award-winning film were British, making it eligible for the category.

Best Direction

'Directing is not an exact science' said Edward Berger, who won Best Direction for German-language film All Quiet on the Western Front. He was nominated alongside Todd Field, Daniel Kwan, Martin McDonagh, Park Chan-Wook, Daniel Scheinert and Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Rising Star

As the only award voted for by the public, we had the choice between Daryl McCormack, Emma Mackey, Sheila Atim, Aimee Lou Wood and Naomi Ackie - and taking it home on 19 February was Emma.

Leading Actor

One of the big four awards saw Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Daryl McCormack, Paul Mescal, Bill Night and Brendan Fraser competing for the best actor prize. However, it was Austin Butler who won for his role as the King of Rock n Roll, Elvis Presley.

Leading Actress

Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett, Danielle Deadwyler, Ana de Armas and Michelle Yeoh were up for leading actress at the 2023 Baftas. 'It's been such an extraordinary year for women', says the winner Cate Blanchett who took on the titular role in Tar.

Best Film

Your Bafta 2023 best film is All Quiet on the Western Front. The Netflix German-language movie saw off the likes of The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Tar and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
