While DC fans have rated the new superhero movie Black Adam a super success as it smashes box office records, critics have taken a different stance on Dwayne Johnson’s new film.

Black Adam has soared to the top spot in the global box office for the third week in a row earning nearly $150 million globally with stars The Rock, Noah Centineo and Henry Cavill leading the cast.

The film follows an enslaved man called Teth-Adam who is reborn with God-like powers.

It has been a passion project for Dwayne Johnson for over a decade, as the former professional wrestler not only stars but also acts as a producer.

He reacted to the continued Box Office domination on Twitter, sharing: “What a strong piece of #BlackAdam business to wake up to. Our film will be the #one movie in the world for the third week in a row. Makes me VERY happy.

“Ultimately, we should all want our theatrical business to THRIVE as we work through and past Covid.”

However - despite the heroic hits - the box office statistics follow an almost villainous report from critics as some rated the Jaume Collet-Serra-directed film as low as 28% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Overall, Black Adam has a rating of 58% on the American review site with most of the comments citing that Hollywood’s highest paid actor (Johnson) was not enough to carry the storyline.

One said: “Watching an action movie should not feel like a chore, but this one does.”

While Rolling Stones senior editor David Fear stated: “Not even the pleasure of watching Johnson enter into a blockbuster template he seemed destined to dominate can make up for how generic, flavourless and incoherent it is.”

Other critics agreed with Fear giving Johnson’s performance top marks, but suggesting that the plot was not solid enough for The Rock.

Black Adam is still in cinemas after it premiered on 21 October.
