Actor Gaspard Ulliel died in a skiing accident in the French Alps.

The 37-year-old had joined the cast of new Marvel TV series Moon Knight which is currently airing.

Sky News reported that according to local police, the accident took place in the Savoie region of the French Alps after apparently colliding with another skier at a crossing point on the slopes.

He was hospitalised at the Grenoble University Hospital in a serious condition, after being found unconscious in the ski area of the La Rosiere resort.

Who was Gaspard Ulliel?

He began acting while still in school and made a number of appearances in TV films before becoming known as a film actor.

The actor was known as the face of the Chanel men’s fragrance Bleu de Chanel.

He won a César Award for Most Promising Actor for his performance in the 2004 film A Very Long Engagement.

In 2007 Ulliel portrayed the young Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising, which was his first English language film.

Among his other roles was that of French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 biopic film Saint Laurent, which earned him a Lumières Award for Best Actor.

National media is reporting his wife Gaelle Pietri shared a touching photo of their son skiing in the days before Ulliel’s tragic death.

Ulliel had joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel superhero streaming series Moon Knight. He portrayed Anton Mogart / Midnight Man.

The show which will run on Disney+ is based on the Marvel comics character of the same name. Midnight Man is an art thief and rival to Moon Knight.

The first episode of the show, which stars Oscar Issac and also features Ethan Hawke in the cast, is due to run on 30 March.

What have people said about his death?

French Prime Minister, Jean Castrex paid tribute to the actor on Twitter saying: “Gaspard Ulliel grew up with cinema and cinema grew with him. They loved each other madly. It is with a heavy heart that we will now see his most beautiful interpretations and meet this certain look. We are losing a French actor.”

Meanwhile, France’s culture minister Roselyne Bachelot said cinema had lost an “immense talent, and tweeted: “ I send my condolences to his loved ones and my loving thoughts to all who mourn him today.”

Screenwriter Ben Trebilcook wrote: “Sad to hear Gaspard Ulliel has tragically died in a skiing accident. A hugely talented performer. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
