Goldie Hawn is celebrating her 77th birthday, with the Overboard actress still looking fantastic in her septuagenarian era.

Hawn and her daughter, Kate Hudson (43), who look incredibly alike, were spotted at the Glass Onion: A Knives Mystery premiere in Los Angeles. Kate has followed in her mother’s footsteps with a hugely successful film career, and her latest acting venture – an American murder mystery film written and directed by Rian Johnson – has her play the role of Birdie Jay, alongside Daniel Craig.

Mother and daughter have never starred in a film together, despite the recipe for a box office smash. Veteran actress, Goldie, has said she would not make a movie with her daughter because the expectations would be too high. She said it would come with ‘too much baggage’ when speaking to the LA Times in 2017.

The glamorous mother-daughter duo are often spotted out together, sharing a close bond as well as two hugely successful careers.

Another example of following in mama's starry footsteps include mother-daughter actors Sally Dyvenor (59), from ITV’s Coronation Street and her daughter Phoebe (27), who had a breakout-starring role in Netflix’s Bridgerton. The latter has just been linked with a possible Andrew Garfield romance.

The veteran soap actress, Sally, will no doubt have offered words of advice for a life in show business to her daughter. They seem to enjoy family time together with Sally’s other children, Harriet (18) and son Samuel (25) who Sally shares with her husband, Tim (60). They recently went on a family holiday to Italy, with pictures of Phoebe throwing a coin into Rome’s Trevi fountain being posted on the young actress’ Instagram.

Demi Moore, the iconic Ghost actress, who celebrated her 60th birthday last week, has a daughter, Rumer Willis (34) who has starred in Hostage, The House Bunny and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The pair have always got on well with Demi even ensuring her daughter got a part in Striptease, a film from 1996 when Rumer was just seven years old.

"Well, she asked to have the opportunity to audition so after much discussion with my husband, I went and asked them if they would be willing to let her try because she wanted it so badly," Demi said at the time.

Not all acting mother-daughter relationships are easy though. Judy Garland and her daughter Liza Minnelli are two of the most legendary names from Hollywood, with Judy starring as a child in The Wizard of Oz in 1939, and Liza being known for her incredible stage performances, as well as film and TV work.

Describing her mother as ‘very very strict,’ Liza was unable to watch the film adaption of her mother’s life, portrayed by Renée Zellweger.

Garland would have her daughter dance to her rendition of "Swanee" from A Star Is Born. "I’d say, 'I don’t have a choreographer,' which made her laugh," Minnelli said. "She got such a kick out of it. It was like, 'Look what I made.' And I was so happy whenever she was happy."

If the press did compare Minnelli to her mother, Garland became indignant. "She said, 'How dare they? You’re your own woman. Dammit! Can’t they see?' And she’d throw it down in the trash,” Minnelli told Variety in 2020.

Liza has absolute love and adoration for her mother though, who died in 1969, saying she channels her opinion to guide her when she feels unsure.

"When I call on her, she’s there, and I call on her a lot," Minnelli said. "She’ll say, 'Ignore it' a lot. She’ll say, 'It’s one opinion. Who cares? Just keep going.'"

An actress who had a truly difficult relationship with her famous mother was Carrie Fisher. The Star Wars actress rose to prominence in 1977 after Star Wars: A new Hope and its sequels. Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, was a Hollywood stalwart of the screen who had a career lasting almost 70 years. Carrie died of a heart attack in 2016 and her mother died just one day later.

The pair did not speak for ten years when Carrie was in her 20s. “I didn’t want to be around her,” said Carrie to Oprah Winfrey in a 2011 interview.

Mother-daughter relationships can often be complicated, but when you throw fame and giant egos in the mix it can lead to moments of estrangement, as this last example shows.
