Despite the lukewarm reviews The Super Mario Bros Movie received critically, commercially Universal, Illumination and Nintendo must be over the moon (or Rainbow Road to my fellow Mario Kart enthusiasts) that the film has now reached a global box office of $700m USD (around £617m) and sits currently at 142 in the list of all time box office successes - a mere fortnight into its cinematic run.

WIth that comes collateral success also, especially for Jack Black who voices the film’s antagonist, Bowser. His single, “Peaches,” was already discussed as having early Oscar buzz when the movie was first released, but now the actor can boast having his first solo single success, with the ballad entering the Billboard Top 100 at 85 and more than likely set to ascend up the charts.

While Black is no stranger to music charts, be it the success of his film School of Rock in 2003 or his continued work as a member of Tenacious D alongside Kyle Gass, it does appear that the single, dedicated to Anya Taylor-Joy’s character Princess Peach, might be his most successful to date.

Searching the Billboard archives regarding some of his other musical work, the only single from Tenacious D that has charted within the top 100 of the US singles chart came in 2006. “The Pick of Destiny,” the lead single from the movie of the same name, entered the Billboard Top 100 at 75, before dropping out a week later. However Black has had more success in the album charts, with Tenacious D having appeared on the Billboard 200 album chart on four separate occasions - 2001's self-titled Tenacious D (#33), 2006's The Pick of Destiny soundtrack (#8), 2012's Rize of the Fenix (#4) and 2018's Post-Apocalypto (#93).

Meanwhile in the United Kingdom, Peaches debuted in last week’s single chart at 47, narrowly missing out on an appearance in the top 40 chart. However, the midweek chart for April 17 to April 23 has indicated that there is a possibility the song will climb up the chart - it currently is sitting at 25 as of writing, and if the Super Mario Bros boom continues, could it be a top ten hit for the actor? The last time Jack Black had success in the UK charts came after the release of 2012’s Rize of the Fenix once again, which rose to number 2 during it’s release cycle.
