James Gunn to take over DC Studios after success at rivals Marvel with Guardians of the Galaxy

Despite working with Marvel before, Gunn has also worked on DC Studios projects to date

Filmmaker James Gunn will head up DC Studios in his next move after already enjoying success with superhero films.

Gunn, 56, has already directed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, but he will now switch allegiances to DC Studios where he will oversee a host of projects.

He will work alongside current DC boss Peter Safran to run a new studio named DC Studios which is set to replace DC Films.

The director will be tasked with overseeing films and TV shows for the franchise, both live-action and animated, which could include well-known superheroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder-woman.

Safran and Gunn will work together as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios.

In a Twitter post confirming the news, Gunn said: “Accurate. So pleased to be here.”

Despite working with Marvel before, Gunn has also worked on DC Studios projects to date.

Gunn has also directed DC’s HBO MAx show Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad film released in 2021.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Marvel boss Kevin Feige spoke on Gunn’s future.

He said “I speak to James almost every day. We have a wonderful thing called the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming out.

“We have a wonderful thing called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in May.

“How he’ll have any time to work on DC until May I don’t know, but once he does have the time I’ll be very excited. I’ll be first in line.”

Marvel’s next scheduled release is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which will be released on November 11. This is a sequel to 2018’s Black Panther which starred the late Chadwick Boseman as King T’Challa.

Meanwhile, DC’s Black Adam starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was released on October 21.

The film centres on ancient being Teth Adam who was bestowed with ‘the powers of the gods’ 5,000 years ago before being reawakened.
