Although Julian Sands starred in many well-known films such as ‘Warlock’ ‘Arachnophobia’ and ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ I will forever associate him with his breakout role as George Emerson in ‘A Room With A View’ (one of my all-time favourite E.M. Forster novels that was made into a film).

Julian Sands starred opposite Helena Bonham Carter in the movie ‘A Room With A View’  and their ‘kiss’ in a field was certainly memorable.  No words needed to be spoken of course, he just strode through the barley and they embraced each other passionately.

The BBC reported that the scene had not been rehearsed. “That as totally improvised, right at the last minute, “Bonham Carter later recalled. They had waited ‘for days’ for the right light and weather conditions to film the scene.

“Suddenly it was, ‘Your’ on! Let’s just do the kiss! Julian, stand there. Helena walk.”

Aside from ‘A Room With A View,’ Julian Stars starred as poet Shelley in Gothic as well as Arachnophobia and Warlock. Julian also acted alongside Richard E. Grant in the 1989 supernatural horror ‘Warlock’ which was directed by Steve Milner. Julian played the son of Satan, the title character, who travels to the modern era from the late 17th century in order to destroy the world.

Julian Sands also appeared in the movie ‘Boxing Helena’ which is about a surgeon (Julian played this part), who becomes obsessed with the woman he has an affair with. He does not accept that she has moved on from their relationship and amputates her limbs before holding her captive.

Madonna was set to play the part of Helena but then dropped out before filming began, the part was then taken on by actress Sherilyn Fenn.

One of Julian Sands other big roles came in the 1990 movie ‘Arachnophobia,’ he played the part of Doctor James Atherton and starred alongside Jeff Daniels and John Goodman. Julian also played the part of a pimp in the 1995 film ‘Leaving Las Vegas.’

Geoffrey Macnab for The Independent wrote that “To call Sands - who has been confirmed dead, months after he went missing during a walking trip to the Californian mountains - versatile is to understate his talent hugely. The debonair English actor from the Yorkshire Dales popped up in every kind of movie imaginable. He could do toffs and he could do thugs-and just about everything in between as well.’”

What are the circumstances behind the death of Julian Sands?

The human remains of the 65 year old actor Julian Sands were discovered by hikers in Southern California five months after he had gone missing in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains. Julian Sands had been reported missing on January 13 and according to Reuters, “A search party organised at the time pulled out 24 hours later due to avalanche risks and poor trail conditions."
