Love Island: The Movie - will there be a film version of hit dating show? Plus who will be in cast, what will the plot be?

A film version of hugely popular dating show Love Island is apparently in the works.

It’s the Christmas present Love Island fans didn’t ask for and had no idea they would be getting, but apparently a film version of the TV series is in the works.

According to Deadline, ITV America is considering adapting the US series for the big screen, because it has become so popular it has led to multiple series in various locations including the US and the UK and various spin-offs (including Love Island: All Stars, which will return for a third series in the UK in January).

David George, CEO of ITV America which produces the show for Peacock in the USA, told Deadline that he’s been in talks about making the series into a film as part of a wider strategy for the series. The working title for the film is said to be Love Island: The Movie, though the project is yet to be officially confirmed.

George, who also also recently took over leadership in for ITV America’s scripted strategy department, explained to the publication that the success of Love Island in America led to a “lightning bolt” moment for him.

Season six gripped the audience, he said, and this made him realise that the series works more like a sport than a television show - which in turn made him think of the potential for a film.

“Why are we not taking Love Island and figuring out how we’re going to translate that into the movie world?,” he said. “There may be something going there. I can’t even begin to tell you what it is, but there are those types of conversations.”

If the Love Island movie was to go ahead, it would be the first time a reality show would have been into a film, with George adding: “We are open to expanding the possibilities of what that brand is.”

As the idea of a Love Island film is in such early stages, there’s not a hint of what the plot line of the actual movie could be or who would be in the cast. Would the cast be made up of previous cast members? Or would an actress actually be playing Love Island USA host Ariana Madix while other celebs portrayed the singles?

Would the film end with a happy couple about to ride off into the sunset together in a fairytale romance to rival that of of past UK runners-up Olivia and Alex Bowen, who met on the show in 2016 and now have two children? Or would the characters struggle to find their type on paper? Perhaps, most importantly, would comedian Iain Stirling be the narrator? Because, quite frankly, we can’t imagine anyone else as the voice of Love Island.

There’s so many unanswered questions, but we’re unlikely to get any answers soon. We will update this page, however, as and when we learn more information.
