Morbius post credit scene: what happens in two bonus scenes after movie - and could there be a sequel?

Morbius is a Marvel Comics character that is owned by Sony and therefore not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

Morbius follows Venom and its sequel, Let There Be Carnage, as the newest film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU).

When biochemist Michael Morbius decides to experiment on himself to cure a rare blood disease (God love the American healthcare system) he accidentally turns himself into a vampire instead.

The film, which was released in cinemas on 1 April, seems set to bank a couple of hundred million at the box office despite receiving consistently terrible reviews.

You have to wonder if the initial release is all part of some April Fool’s joke and a version of the film that’s actually good is waiting in the wings.

One thing that is ever-popular with Marvel fans, however, is a tasty mid or post-credits that teases some future happening in the film universe.

What happened in the first Morbius mid-credits scene?

There are two mid-credits scenes at the end of Morbius, and no post-credits scenes.

The first Morbius post-credits scene connects the movie to Spider-Man: No Way Home, with the sky splintering in the same way as it did at the start of the Holland’s Spider-Man sequel.

It then cuts to a jail cell in which we find Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes - Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.

A newscast reveals that Toomes is awaiting a hearing to find out if he will be released from prison.

What does this mean?

Vulture was the main bad guy in Spiderman: Homecoming - a black market arms dealer in alien tech that was eventually bested by Spidey and sent to a high security prison.

While it’s not unheard of for characters from earlier movies to come back in sequels, in this case it is a pretty big deal, because Morbius isn’t really a sequel to Homecoming.

The Tom Holland Spider-Man movies are owned by Sony, but part of the MCU because the two rival studios reached a deal to share the character.

However, the Venom films and Morbius are part of the SSU, not the MCU, and characters from one universe are not supposed to be able to appear in another.

But then No Way Home happened and broke all the rules, busting open the multiverse and bringing Eddie Brock and Venom briefly into the MCU.

This was the result of a spell cast by Doctor Strange which brought everyone who knew Peter Parker as Spider-Man, from all universes into the Marvel universe.

And now Morbius is returning the favour and seemingly welcoming MCU characters into the SSU.

The big question that this raises is how many other characters will be flitting between the two film universes over the next deluge of films?

The answer to that will become clear as the films come out, but it’s unlikely to stop with Vulcan.

What happened in the second Morbius mid-credits scene?

The second post-credits scene focuses on Toomes again, this time in his full Vulture getup as he appears in the desert to meet Morbius.

Vulture tells Morbius that he doesn’t know how he got there but he suspects that Spider-Man is somehow involved.

When Vulture suggests forming a team with Morbius to “do some good”, Morbius responds: “intriguing”.

What does the second mid-credits scene mean?

It’s not explicitly stated, but it certainly sounds like this is a set-up for the Sinister Six - a group of supervillains who torment Spider-Man in the comics.

The coming together almost happened in No Way Home, but only five villains (Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman and Lizard) were mustered.

The Sinister Six has been through many variations in the comics, with all of the villains drawn from a list of Spidey’s enemies, and Morbius and Vulture have both been in the group before.

Venom has also been on the roster previously and is a likely candidate to join again, as is Kraven the Hunter, a big game hunter and Spider-Man villain who will get his cinematic debut in 2023.

Future SSU films may reveal more information about the Sinister Six and its membership.

Superhero films love to give out this type of information in mid and post-credits scenes, so don’t leave the cinema until the credits have rolled.
