The most awkward and cringe worthy moments at the Oscars including THAT Will Smith and Chris Rock slap

The 95th Academy Awards is fast approaching and the ceremony has no shortage when it comes to awkward and cringe-worthy TV moments. The Oscars are in full preparation and plans are in place so that there isn’t a repeat of last year's fiasco. 

The award ceremony has seen some very shocking moments since it began. We take a look at the most awkward moments that will leave your toes curling.

2022 - Will Smith and Chris Rock #slapgate

The moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock will go down in Oscars history as the most shocking. 

Hosting the 2022 awards Chris made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s alopecia; her husband Will walked up to the host and slapped him in front of millions of people watching. 

2017 - And who does the Award goes to?

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally presented the Best Picture Award to the musical La La Land. In one of the Oscar's biggest blunders the pair announced the wrong winner. Announcing that La La Land had won but after the film director Jordan Horowitz thanked everyone in his acceptance speech he then realised the mistake.

The film Moonlight had actually won Best Picture and the La La Land director had to explain that the presenters got it wrong. The audience weren’t sure if he was joking but he assured them it was not a joke. Definitely a cringeworthy moment for the Oscars.  

2016 - Sam Smith ‘first gay man’ to win 

British singer Sam Smith won an Oscar for his single Writings on the Wall for the James Bond film Spectre. In his acceptance speech the singer explained that he had read an article that said “no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar and if this is the case even if it isn’t, I want to dedicate this to the LQBTQ community”.

Sadly for Sam the Hollywood Reporter proved that he in fact wasn’t the first. Elton John, Dustin Lance Black, Howard Ashman, and Scott Rudin were all openly gay when they were awarded their Oscars.

2014 - John Travolta What did he say? 

John Travolta confused everyone when he pronounced singer Idina Mezel's name. When he introduced the Frozen singer he said: “Please welcome the wickedly talented …. The one and only …. Adele Dazeem.” 

There was no love lost between these two as the following year Idina got her revenge when  she jokingly introduced him as her very good friend ‘Glom Gazingo.’

2013 - Jennifer Lawrence Trips on Stairs 

Jennifer won Best Actress for her role in the Silver linings playbook. The actress looked stunning in her long white and pink gown but as she walked up on stage she stumbled on the stairs and fell on the floor. 

As the audience stood to applaud the actress joked that they were only standing because they felt bad that she fell. Jennifer was also caught on camera taking a tumble on the red carpet a year later at the 2014 Oscars. 

2011 - James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted

The unlikely duo hosted the Awards ceremony and tried their hardest to be funny. With a comedy skit that saw James in a pink satin dress and Anne in a tuxedo their jokes fell flat and didn’t go down well with the audience. 

Fans described the hosts as "one of the worst Oscar telecasts in history” and they haven’t been asked back to present the awards since. 

2008 - Adrien Brody kisses Halle Berry 

When Adrien Brody was announced as the winner for Best Actor for his role in the Pianist. He walked on stage and passionately kissed actress Halle Berry who was presenting the award.

Speaking about the incident in an interview with Andy Cohen a few years later, Halle was asked what was going through her mind at that moment. To which she replied “What the f**** is happening’. The actress explained that it wasn’t planned and she knew nothing about it but as it was the Oscars just went along with it.
