As 1960s sex symbol Raquel Welch passes away at 82, we look back at some of her iconic roles

Hollywood actress Raquel Welch has passed away at the age of 82. She rose to fame after break-out roles in Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C in the 1960s. However, it was more her outfit than her acting that attracted the most attention in the movie One Million Years B.C.

Raquel Welch appeared on screen in what can only be described as a small deerskin bikini and immediately became known as a sex symbol. She was ranked third in Playboy's 100 Sexiest Stars of the 20th Century and one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History in a 1995 issue of Empire magazine.

In 2012, GQ magazine spoke to the legendary star about some of her favourite actors to work with and how her nickname of ‘Mama Duck’ came about. When she was asked how her nickname came about, she said: “Well I don’t know, because I’m a woman of a certain age, and I’ve been there, done that. And I have a lot of experience in, well, various areas. And I tend to look around at younger women and I feel kind of maternal.”

As well as starring in Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C, Raquel also appeared in Bandolero!, 100 Rifles, and Bedazzled. She also played the transgender titular character Myra Breckinridge in the 1970s film.

The actress may have been seen as a sex symbol, but she still won awards such as a Golden Globe for her role in the film The Three Musketeers. She also appeared on The Cher Show in 1975 where she performed the song 'I’m a Woman'.

Raquel Welch was married four times and had two children, Tahnee and Damon Welch from her first marriage to James Welch. She was pictured with the late Gina Lollobrigida at the BAFTAS in the 1990s.
