A romance between the British Prince and the son of the US President has made its way to Amazon Prime Video today; and rather than make a joke about Prince Harry and Hunter Biden, instead it’s the focus of the film “Red, White and Royal Blue,” the feature film debut of Tony-award winning stage-writer/director Matthew Lopez (The Inheritance.)

The synopsis for the film, direct from Amazon Prime Video, reads: “Alex Claremont-Diaz is the son of Ellen Claremont, the first female President of the United States, who is running for re-election. During his visit to the United Kingdom for a royal wedding, he has a physical altercation with Henry, a British prince.”

“The incident is photographed and highly publicised with both parties forcing Alex and Henry to pretend to be friends with each other to prevent it from becoming a full-blown diplomatic and media crisis that would distract from Alex's mother's election bid.”

"Red, White & Royal Blue" was originally a 2019 contemporary romance novel written by Casey McQuiston and gained significant popularity for its fresh and inclusive approach to the romance genre. It received praise for its LGBTQ+ representation, witty dialogue, and engaging chemistry between its two protagonists. The story not only delves into the romantic aspects of the relationship but also examines the impact of their love on their personal lives and the world around them.

The decision to adapt "Red, White & Royal Blue" into a film was influenced by the novel's widespread appeal and the relevance of its themes to a contemporary audience. The book's exploration of LGBTQ+ relationships, political dynamics, and the pressures of public life resonated with readers, making it a compelling choice for adaptation for the first-time director.
