I mean Doja Cat said it herself in her 2020 single, she is a true ‘Boss B****’, which has now been hammered home by Time magazine who ranked the singer as one of the most influential people of 2023.

Chosen among the likes of Creed actor Michael B Jordan, everyone’s favourite internet daddy Pedro Pascal and White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge, Doja Cat was submitted by Baz Luhrmann, who worked with the performance artist on the Oscar nominated movie Elvis.

Baz said: “She’s at the top because she works to bring everything she does to the highest possible level…Doja Cat is a true child of the internet, creatively plugged into the kind of social connection that I’m generationally incapable of understanding. She is personally connected with her fans, and that allows her to understand and feed back to them.”

Baz initially praised Doja’s work in connecting this generation to the King himself, Elvis, after ‘translating’ Hound Dog for a new audience before adding that the rapper does not have a ‘brand’ so she brings the unexpected to every event or production she takes part in, leading to excitement among fans and audiences alike.

For reference, one could simply look to Doja’s numerous outfit changes during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year which included the iconic look of 30,000 crystals for Schiaparelli and a whole load of red body paint.

As Baz Luhrmann mentioned, I too personally think that Doja is influential as a result of her career being born on social media in the last decade meaning she has shaped her music and style to the latest trends and been supported by the fans who initially helped her to launch her to success; not to forget her overwhelming talent.

Gone are the days off people being launched into the music industry by X Factor or Britain’s Got Talent as we welcome TikTok users such as Mimi Webb and Megan Thee Stallion who too have found their success through catchy lyrics, novelty aspects and dance beats.

In 2012, Doja confessed that after dropping out of school she spent all day scrolling through the internet for beats and instrumentals before taking a break and returning after writer's block (and declining an offer to work with Billie Eilish) in 2018 when she released her debut solo album and the viral music video for novelty song ‘Mooo!’ Which not only catapulted Doja to success but secured her as one of the internet’s hottest artists.

Following this, Doja Cat has amassed over 70 million followers across her social media accounts, eight of her songs have gone viral on TikTok being used over 15 million times and she has picked up a Grammy Award, five Billboard music awards and five AMAs proving that she is not only successful with fans but also with the award boards.

Doja’s blatant honesty and consistent social media interaction has fuelled her popularity and influence respectively, with one of her most recent Tweets calling out Elon Musk’s blue tick policy (whereby you have to pay to keep the verification symbol) creating a lot of conversation in the comments section.

Doja tweeted: “Having a blue tick now means there’s a higher chance that you're a complete loser and that you're desperate for validation from famous people.”

Although Doja’s tweet suggests she is not desperate for validation, Time magazine’s article comes at a great point for the Say So singer’s career as she probes her potential fourth album in addition to releasing a remix of ‘Kill Bill’ with SZA.

Just like Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik, Doja archived nearly all of her social media posts over the past two days mounting social media buzz and inferring that a big announcement was coming soon.

Using pictures of the ocean and foggy fields, Doja captioned one of the snaps with the number ‘4’ which fans have suggested links to her fourth album.

Despite Doja’s number four, the singer is rightfully suited to be one of the top influencers of 2023 so far.
