Has the question of who’ll replace Lewis Capaldi as a headliner at this year’s Reading and Leeds festival been answered, or is it once again a misjudged attempt at humour akin to his podcast dramas earlier this year? But murmurs on social media are discussing the idea of The 1975 headlining the festival once again after comments made by lead singer Matty Healy.

Midway through their headline set at TRNSMT Festival over the weekend, Healy revealed to the crowd that they would be taking over from Lewis Capaldi at the August Bank Holiday event, and would be playing the entirety of their debut album, “The 1975,” to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the album.

Healy said onstage: “So, on Saturday at Reading and Sunday at Leeds in celebration of 10 years of our debut album, The 1975 will be playing that album in full in support of our good friend Lewis Capaldi. If you’ve got tickets, good for you. If you haven’t, go and get them. We’ll see you there.”

Should Healy’s comments be true, it would mean the group would have headlined back-to-back Reading and Leeds festivals, after the band stepped in to replace last year’s headliners, Rage Against The Machine, after the band dropped out due to an injury suffered by lead singer Zach de la Rocha.

Festival Republic have since confirmed that The 1975 will indeed be replacing Lewis Capaldi as a headliner at Leeds and Reading Festival this year after a morning of speculation, confirming the news when reached for a comment by the BBC late Monday afternoon.

Reading and Leeds Festival takes place from August 25 to 27, with headliners confirmed as Billie Eilish, Sam Fender and The Killers on the main stage.
