Miley Cyrus dedicated her new single ‘Used to be Young’ to the late Sinead O’Connor in a TV special with ABC on Thursday as she performed the new track.

Miley, 30, spoke about when Sinead O’Conner - who passed away in July - wrote an open letter to Miley in 2013 when she released the single ‘Wrecking Ball'. Miley explained that she had no idea about the Irish singer’s “fragile mental state” and that she was only 20 years old and “couldn’t wrap” her head around mental health at the time.

Miley said  “All that I saw was that another woman had told me that this idea was not my idea. And even if I was convinced that it was, it was still just, you know, men in power's idea of me. And they had manipulated me to believe that it was my own idea when it never really was.”

She added “God bless Sinead O'Connor for real, in all seriousness.” Sinead shared the open letter to Miley after the singer had told Rolling Stone that her nudity-filled video for her hit song Wrecking Ball was inspired by Sinead O’Connor’s music vide0 for  ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.

The two singers also had a disagreement on Twitter after Miley mocked Amanda Bynes mental health issues. Sinead urged Miley to apologise and shared that she had received messages encouraging her to commit suicide after the Twitter spat.

Miley Cyrus’ new single was available to download after the ABC special had finished and fans have already branded the ballad a ‘masterpiece’. In the music video Miley is seen crying as she sings the powerful song.

The ‘Flowers’ singer explained that the song reflects on her years of being in the spotlight and constantly being judged. Miley became a household name when she starred as Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel at 12 years old.

Miley also appeared to get emotional when speaking about her father - who celebrates his 62 birthday today - explaining that she was always made to feel like a star of the family and her musical success was always compared to her country singer father’s.

Getting emotional Miley said “I will say that I feel, vocally, my dad was under-appreciated”. According to the Daily Mail Miley doesn’t have a relationship with her father and the pair are no longer on speaking terms.
