The Super Bowl halftime show has evolved from a quaint marching in 1967 to a 20-minute spills and thrills extravaganza that draws in the biggest names in music as well as millions of viewers each year.

While the footballing main event this year sees the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs, Bad Girl Riri is making her long-awaited return to the stage as Rihanna is set to perform for the first time in seven years.

The ‘Stay’ singer will no doubt put on a performance worthy of her comeback after eight months of rehearsals, and she has a wealth of recordings to fall back on to fill her short slot in Arizona.

If Rihanna wanted to gain inspiration from previous halftime shows, although she does not need any introduction herself, there are several iconic performances worthy of being watched all over again:

Beyonce

A multimedia spectacular, a Destiny’s Child reunion and a gigantic marching band and group of backing dancers catapulted Beyonce to be one of the most iconic halftime performers, when she took to the stage in 2013.

Queen Bey’s Super Bowl catalogue included hits such as Love on Top, Crazy in Love and Bootylicious urging the crowd and millions of viewers watching to sing along.

Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson

This performance may be one to remember forever, or one to forget, as Janet Jackson suffered a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ when singing with Justin Timberlake and trying to undergo a costume change in the last few seconds.

Only a handful of people would be able to sing smash hits such as ‘Poker Face’, while jumping off of a roof and dancing, before catching a football toss and disappearing into nothing, but Lady Gaga did this all with grace in 2017 to make an iconic halftime show.

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson is certainly the King of Pop, and could also be considered the King of Halftime, as he stood on the stage for two minutes straight in utter silence before lip-synching his way through a medley of his famous songs.

Michael’s performance came to a close with 3,500 children running onto the football field alongside cards with drawings made by the kids of Los Angeles, and a blow-up globe on the 50-yard line.

Katy Perry

Now, although Katy Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl show was only 12 minutes long, it remains to be the most-watched halftime show ever with 118.5 million views on television due to its colourful set and special effects, fireworks, special guests and also the iconic ‘left shark’ who became a meme.
