It is fair to say that Shakira has had more than a share of trials and tribulations in recent years. Not only is she set to stand for trial for tax fraud (she has been accused of failing to pay $14.5m (£12m) in tax between 2012 and 2014, but she split from her Gerard Pique last year after over ten years together.

If that wasn’t bad enough, she was left devastated in recent days after video footage emerged of her ex Gerard Pique’s new partner Clara Chia Marti in the background at their home in 2021 (when Gerard and Shakira were believed to still be together).

However, it would seem that the tide has now turned and thanks to Shakira’s new song ‘Out of Your League,’ Shakira has got the ultimate revenge. Her song has become the most watched new Latin song in YouTube’s history.

At the time of publishing, the song had 87m views in just ove two days.

With lyrics such as “I’m worth two 22’s. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo. You traded a Rolex for a Casio,” there can be ‘no doubt’ that these words are aimed at Gerard and his new girlfriend Clara Chia Marti.

The song ‘Out Of Your League’ is a collaboration between Shakira and DJ Bizarrup and it is the first time the pair have worked together.

According to the BBC, “Shakira joins a hallowed list of Latin performers to break YouTube records-including J Balvin, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.”

Elsewhere in the song, Shakira also makes more personal references to Gerard with the lyrics, “lots of time at the gym, but your brain needs a little work too".

The split from Gerard clearly had a profound effect on not only her but her children and she spoke about this in an interview with Elle magazine. “It’s really upsetting for two kids who are trying to process their parents’ separation,” she said. “And sometimes I just feel like this is all a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up at some point. But no, it’s real.”

Although Shakira is clearly still devastated over the split from Gerard, perhaps her song’s success will kick-start continued professional success for her in 2023?
