They say that football players shouldn’t read reviews of their performances after games, and perhaps the same should be said about watching interviews with ex-partners. At least in the case of Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique, who was slammed during a tell-all interview with his ex, popstar Shakira, during an interview overnight with Las Estrellas in Mexico.

Of the choice cuts of tea-spilling that Shakira undertook during her interview with journalist Enrique Acevedo was how she discovered that Pique, her partner of 11 years, was being unfaithful to her - through an innocent jar of jam.

Shakira explained that she discovered that a jar of strawberry jam that was in the couple’s fridge had been eaten and that the pair’s children (Sasha and Milan) did not like eating it - meaning that someone else had been in the house with Pique while Shakira and the children were away.

That would then explain the use of a head in a fridge in the music video for Shakira’s single, Te Felicito, released in January 2023. The song has also been referred to as a diss track to Pique’s new love interest, Clara Chia Marti, after the couple went public with their relationship last month - as allegations of cheating between Pique and Clara continue.

That allegation has certainly not been lost on Shakira, who during the interview stated that “there is a place in hell reserved for women who don’t support other women" concerning the cheating allegations that compound Pique and Clara’s relationship thus far.

The interview wasn’t a pile-on situation regarding the foibles of Pique and Clara, with Shakira instead demonstrating a mature approach to the break up - one that revitalised her form of female empowerment. “I bought that story, that a woman needed a man to complete herself. I also had that dream of a family where the children had a mum and dad under the same roof.”
