A look at Shakira’s relationship with former ‘mother-in-law’ as she builds a wall in ongoing Piqué drama

Shakira technically has never had a mother-in-law, having decided not to take the plunge and get married. When you're a millionaire and chart-topping versatile powerhouse, why would you ever consider marriage a necessary thing?

This hasn't stopped her from referencing a 'mother-in-law' in the form of Gerard Piqué's mum in a new song released last week.

It also hasn't prevented the singer from taking her revenge in the form of a wall being constructed to separate her Barcelona home from that of Montserrat Bernabéu, the mother of Piqué.

Reports online are that a TV camera spotted a cement mixer working around Shakira’s house in Barcelona in the last 24 hours (Thursday 19 January). The homes of Shakira and Montserrat are adjacent and there is access between the two properties... until now, it seems.

Piqué and Shakira split in 2022 after more than a decade together, and he is now dating Clara Chia Marti - a woman who - at 23 years old - is more than 20 years younger than Shakira (45). This led to a 'revenge' song from Shakira, released in January 2023.

Called Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions Vol 53, the song surged to the top of Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart within days. It also became the Latin song with the most streams in a single day.

According to Marca, the revenge song has already made her £419,150 from YouTube, £409,330 from Amazon, £294,720 from Spotify and £980,000 from Apple.

Not only did the singer make reference to her ex-husband and his new girlfriend, but she also made public that she's not a big fan of Montserrat Bernabéu, the 'mother-in-law'.

Aside from blaring her song at all hours of the day (Bernabéu is the singer's neighbour in Barcelona), Shakira has even placed a figure of a witch on her balcony that directly faces the home of Piqué's mother, a well-known doctor.

While the singer used to affectionately refer to Bernabéu as "my little mother-in-law," reports say their relationship soured following the pair's split. It's also alleged Shakira was infuriated by her former parents-in-law, who welcomed Piqué’s new girlfriend with open arms.

Her lyrics read: "You left me with my mother-in-law as a neighbour, with the press at my door and a debt to the taxman."

She goes on to add: "Women don’t cry anymore, they cash in."

The lyric is thought to be in reference to rumours that Shakira is breaking ties with her father-in-law, Joan Piqué, and his company Kosmos.

According to reports, the singer helped him sign various sponsorship deals and helped him land several investments with her star power.

It is believed she is currently in the works of cutting off all ties with the Piqué family.

Shakira refused to make any comment about either Clara or Piqué until she gained full custody of their two children – only afterwards did she decide to drop this song.

Her children, Milan and Sasha, will live with her in Miami, but the judge ruled Piqué would be able to visit anytime he liked.
