Could we see what “The Idol” should have been if rumours regarding Taylor Swift throwing her hat into the television ring are anything to go by? As reported in the Daily Mail, speculation is mourning that Taylor Swift is looking to create a “meta-feminist” television series, with talks already with one screenwriter regarded for her most recent work - “Succession” screenwriter Alison Birch.

The move is seen by many television commentators as a rebuke towards the critically maligned HBO Series, “The Idol,” which not only suffered from a change in creative direction after Sam Levinson and The Weeknd took over from Amy Seimetz but was viewed as an ugly, “male gaze” television series that very much had a different, more female-empowered storyline before Seimetz’s absence due to “a major creative overhaul”

The television series is allegedly looking to draw inspiration from Taylor Swift's own life and relationships, much like her music, with sources providing these details suggesting that Swift's famous exes could provide the perfect source of inspiration for the storyline, akin to how some of her biggest hits were inspired by loves labour lost of old.

Birch was instrumental in the creation of one of “Succession” most developed characters on the show, Siobhan “Shiv” Roy, played by Sarah Snook (who is also appearing this week on AppleTV+’s new feature, “The Beanie Bubble”) and how Birch made a strong female character in a show set in a male-dominated environment was what caught Taylor Swift's attention and makes her an ideal writing partner for this new project.

The TV project will could also possibly be produced by Searchlight Pictures, a studio known for its critically acclaimed films like "Nomadland" and "The Shape of Water." The studio's presidents, David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield,  expressed excitement about collaborating with Taylor Swift, describing her as "a once-in-a-generation artist and storyteller."

While specific details about the plot and casting are not revealed, it is mentioned that Taylor Swift previously announced her plans to direct her first feature film, based on an original script she wrote, which may have led to the deal with Searchlight Pictures, picking up the film and a television series as part of a package of options.

Swift has already been praised for her directorial efforts, having directed a number of her music videos herself, and demonstrating that she’s not just a voice; she might just be the total entertainment package.

More details as they develop over the next few months.
