After a failed attempt at launching his new album, “Utopia,” from the Pyramids of Giza, hip-hop artist Travis Scott is once again going to attempt a live stream in celebration of the recent album - this time at Rome’s Circo Massimo on August 7 2023. Those fluent in Italian will recognize the English translation of the name; Circus Maximus, which also happens to be the name of Scott’s film accompanying the album.

The original performance in Egypt was cancelled at the 11th hour in what has been described as “production issues,” but plans to perform at the historic site in Italy shouldn’t suffer from the same problem. In the last few weeks, Circus Maximus has been the site of concerts from Måneskin, Bruce Springsteen, Guns N’ Roses, and more.

The site will also house the “Rock in Roma” programme of music taking place this summer, with Imagine Dragons performing as part of their “Mercury” world tour this weekend, only a few days before Travis Scott’s second attempt at a launch party for his once-more critically acclaimed new work.

The Circus Maximus was an ancient Roman venue that served as the largest location for ludi, which were public games associated with Roman religious festivals. These games were sponsored by prominent Romans or the Roman state for the entertainment of the Roman people and gods. Ludi ranged in scale from one-day events to elaborate multi-day celebrations featuring horse and chariot racing, athletics, plays, beast hunts, and gladiator fights.

In recent years, the Circus Maximus has seen a diverse range of uses and activities; the site has been chosen as a location for celebrating significant events, including victory celebrations following Italy's success in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the Serie A victories of the A.S. Roma football club. The site has been utilized for cultural events, art exhibitions, and festivals, showcasing Rome's rich heritage and artistic creativity. Occasionally, historical reenactments and performances have taken place, allowing visitors to experience ancient Roman life and entertainment.

The introduction of the Circo Maximo Experience in 2019 has provided a unique virtual and augmented reality journey through the history of the Circus Maximus. As a public park, the site offers recreational space for locals and tourists to relax and enjoy the outdoors amidst historical surroundings. It's appearance and historical significance have also made it an attractive location for film and TV productions set in ancient Rome.
