Ben Whishaw’s medical comedy-drama This Is Going To Hurt is among the leading contenders for this year’s BAFTA TV Awards, with nominees announced for the ceremony this morning (Wednesday 22 March). The joint BBC and AMC production has been nominated for Best Mini-series and Whishaw himself for Best Actor ahead of the awards ceremony taking place on 14 May 2023, and hosted by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan.

Whishaw, however, looks to have his work cut out in the Best Actor field; he sees himself up against Martin Freeman, star of another hot contender for the BAFTAs this year with The Responder, Gary Oldman in the AppleTV+ series Slow Horses and a perennial favourite of the TV awards season - Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders.

However, the omission of the critically acclaimed BBC series Happy Valley, featuring Sarah Lancashire, was questioned after the announcement was made. There is, unfortunately, a good reason as to why it didn’t make the nominations - its broadcast date took place after the cut off period for considerations for 2023’s awards. However, fans of the actress will still be pleased to see her nominated for her role in the series Julia, facing stiff competition in the Best Actress category against Kate Winslet and Imelda Staunton.

Not satisfied with people talking about her possible casting in the next James Bond movie, Daisy May Cooper’s prolific 2023 has seen her earn a nomination for Female performance in a comedy programme for her role in Am I Being Unreasonable?, but in another tight awards race, she faces competition with Diane Morgan’s Philomena Cunk character. Morgan was recently a guest on US talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers, as her show Cunk on Earth has recently been added to Netflix’s US platform.

Former Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, has also earned a nomination at this year’s awards, vying for the Male performance in a comedy programme award after appearing in the revised-history biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Meanwhile, Ant and Dec’s stranglehold of the Entertainment programme award may be under threat, as it faces off against ITV’s The Masked Singer and BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
