The location base for the series is Manchester city centre, but the show also shoots in Lancashire, Cheshire, West Yorkshire, and Wales for series 3.

Location manager for the show, Danny Newton, said the North of England has proved consistently brilliant, praising Manchester, adding: "Manchester is so versatile you’ve got the urban landscapes and then can drive 30 minutes and you’re in beautiful countryside.

It’s an ambitious show and is very filmic, we try and create a beautiful backdrop for these extraordinary characters".

Other locations used in the show include the Manchester Star and Garter pub, which is used as the interior of the Crows Nest pub in the series.

Scenes shot for the fictional town of Hawley are filmed in Bacup in Lancashire. Blademoor Prison is actually Shrewsbury Prison, which is now a museum and visitor centre.

Vinnie’s shack is located in the woodlands at Arley Hall in Cheshire, instead of Bolton, and Erin’s home is set on a street in Ashton-under-Lyne.
