When I read the mission of the British Dyslexia Association, I immediately thought about Hamza Yassin and how his win on Strictly Come Dancing will hopefully inspire many dyslexic people to feel that he can achieve anything they want.

The Association’s mission is to “change society by breaking through the barriers and enabling everyone with dyslexia to be acknowledged, accepted and empowered.”

The word that particularly stands out for me in this statement is ‘empowered’ because it can be difficult to feel empowered when you are struggling with something. Throughout his journey on Strictly, Hamza has been open about having dyslexia and how it has helped him in many ways.

When he appeared on This Morning, Hamza revealed his struggles with dyslexia but he also said that he “honestly believes it is a gift of mine.” He has previously revealed on ITV’s Loose Women that his dyslexia has helped him visually.

PeopleWorld exclusively spoke to Kate Griggs, the CEO of global charity Made By Dyslexia, to get her reaction to Hamza winning and how it will help others with dyslexia.

“Congratulations to the amazing Hamza for his Strictly win, “ she said. Being so open about how his dyslexic strengths helped him will be inspiring for dyslexics everywhere. Finding and focusing on our Dyslexic Thinking skill-in Hamza’s case spatial awareness, visualising, creativity and people skills. This make us an unstoppable force, whether it’s on the dance floor or in whatever career we choose”

Fellow wildlife presenter Ben Fogle, (who also has dyslexia), was quick to send his congratulations to Hamza on his Instagram and I love the words he chose to use. “Combine humility and kindness with talent and you have a winner.”

Hamza clearly has great things ahead of him, and I am sure he will continue to use his fame to help and empower others with dyslexia to help them realise they can achieve anything they want.
