What is Heartbreak High?

Heartbreak High (2022) is a reboot of the beloved Aussie soap of the same name which was a hit with viewers in the 1990s.

Set in the fictional Hartley High, the new series is an update of the ‘90s high school drama.

The original drama propelled the careers of Callan Mulvey, who played bad boy Bogdan Drazic, and Home and Away star Ada Nicodemou who played Katerina Ioannou.

The show is the first major locally produced drama series from Netflix since the Covid 19 pandemic.

The creator of the new series, Hannah Carroll Chapman, says the reboot has a “life of its own”.

She said wanted to avoid the show being a nostalgic revisit of the original show for the original viewers, but did say she hoped old and new viewers alone would enjoy it.

She told Variety: “I’m hoping that there’s a nice balance there, that people who love the original show feel the essence of that show. But that it’s very much for a younger generation.”

Who is in the cast?

The cast includes Josh Heuston who will depict Dusty, a bisexual character who “has slept with half the girls – and even a few boys – at school”.

James Majoos portrays Darren, who goes by they/them pronouns and is described as ‘snarky’ and ‘brash’. Chloe Hayden, meanwhile, plays the "outrageously raw" Quinni.

Bryn Chapman-Parish plays Spider, who is described as the “class clown”.  Gemma Chua-Tran takes on the role of Sasha, an “out lesbian” at the school who goes by both she/her and they/them pronouns.

Also in the cast are Ayesha Madon as Amerie, Asher Yasbincek as Harper, Thomas Weatherall as Malakai, Will McDonald as Ca$h, Sherry-Lee Watson as Missy and Brodie Townsend as Ant.

What can people expect from the new series?

The original series, which was a spin-off of the 1993 film The Heartbreak Kid and aired in 1994, was praised for its multicultural cast, as well as its willingness to tackle difficult issues head on, from drugs to romance to religion to shoplifting and homelessness.

Viewers of the 2022 series will also see a range of diverse and controversial issues being tackled.

The show has been given a 21st century makeover, however, and viewers can expect to see a line-up of gay and non-binary characters.

In the preview of the show, characters are seen partying, doing drag and being chased by police - so viewers can anticipate plenty of drama.

The characters will navigate sex, romance and violence as they come of age.

A synopsis from Netflix reads “A fresh look at Hartley High over 20 years on. A discovery makes Amerie an instant pariah at Hartley High, and causes a mysterious and very public rift with her ride-or-die Harper.
