King Richard: release date of film starring Will Smith, where can I watch it, trailer, and is it on Netflix?

As you’ve probably heard by now, Will Smith’s performance in King Richard absolutely slaps.

Smith plays Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstar sisters Venus and Serena in the biopic directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men).

Smith won his first Oscar for the role in March, but the moment was overshadowed somewhat by an earlier altercation involving the actor and the Oscars host, Chris Rock.

Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada, who has alopecia, and Smith walked onto the stage and slapped Rock across the face.

Smith won the Best Actor award 20 minutes later and used his speech to apologise to the Academy and his fellow nominees (though not Rock, who he apologised to the following day).

What is King Richard about?

The film is based on the true story of the role Richard Williams played in the success of his daughters on the court.

Through a single- minded determination and a 78-page plan, he moulded Venus and Serena, training them on the courts of Compton.

Richard’s wife and mother to the two sisters, Oracene, was also instrumental in the coaching process.

The film charts the rise of two of the most successful tennis players of all time, from Compton to Wimbledon.

Who are Venus and Serena Williams?

Venus, 41, won Wimbledon five times, has seven Grand Slam singles titles and had previously been world number one in both singles and doubles.

Serena, 40,  who became professional two years after Venus, is now considered one of the most successful tennis players of all time.

She has 23 grand slams, one behind Margaret Court’s record, and has won Wimbledon seven times.

Yes, Richard Williams is still alive. He was born on Valentine’s Day 1942 and is now 80 years old.

Oracene Price is 69 - she and Richard divorced in 2002 after 22 years of marriage.

When is the King Richard release date?

King Richard was released in cinemas and on HBO Max (which is unavailable in the UK) on 19 November 2021.

It is still being screened in a limited number of cinemas across the UK currently but will be difficult to find on the big screen soon.
