What to expect from the new series

The sixth series, written by Knight, will conclude the saga of Cillian Murphy’s troubled Tommy Shelby and his family’s rise to power against the backdrop of industrial Birmingham.

It follows on from series five, which introduced Sam Claflin as the leader of the British Union of Fascists, Oswald Mosley, and ended with a cliffhanger as the Shelby family were betrayed by their allies.

She was the matriarch of the Peaky Blinders whose role was due to continue until the end of the show’s run.

Writer Steven Knight said of a sixth series: “Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher.

“We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it.

“While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

Knight told Deadline: “Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie.

“That is what is going to happen.”

The show’s director Anthony Byrne previously told Digital Spy that it takes six months to edit the show.

After filming wrapped in May 2021, we can only presume that the show will return to our tellys from December onwards.

The news was confirmed through the Peaky Blinders social media accounts with a photo of Graham in period costume.

“We’re thrilled that Stephen Graham has joined the cast of #PeakyBlinders series 6,” the caption said.

Show creator Knight previously said he had devised a role in the drama for Graham but rubbished rumours he would play gangster Al Capone.

We also know that Tommy’s wife, Lizzie Stark, will return, played by actor Natasha O’Keeffe, as confirmed by Twitter.

Will Tom Hardy return?

It’s unknown whether Tom Hardy will make his comeback as Jewish gang leader Alfie Solomons, after his surprise return in the series five finale.

Hardy’s on-screen character was shot in the head in the series prior after he betrayed Tommy in favor of the New York mafioso Luca Changretta.

In the latest series, Alfie and his men were a key part of Tommy’s failed assassination plot against Oswald Mosley - so it seems hopeful a return could happen.
