Rescue: Extreme Medics: release date of Channel 4 medical series and what is it about?

New series, Rescue: Extreme Medics, follows the Scottish Trauma Network as it serves a population of 5.4 million people.

The elite network of clinicians ensure that over 30,000 square miles of land is covered, despite the extreme challenges that come with it.

If a patient cannot make it to the emergency room, the Scottish Trauma Network provides life saving care to even the most rural and inaccessible parts of the country.

The geography of Scotland is some of the most challenging in the whole of Europe and the network has to ensure it provides emergency medical help, despite these challenges.

The series follows medics who must go beyond what’s expected in the medical field to treat patients with unusual injuries.

With over 5,000 999 calls daily across Scotland, specialist clinicians in the Ambulance Control Centre in Glasgow must work to identify which patients are at the greatest need of trauma team interventions.

When is Rescue: Extreme Medics on?

Rescue: Extreme Medics will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Monday 28 March 2020.

The programme will air at 9pm and will be available to watch on Channel 4’s catch-up service, All 4, after the broadcast.

The series has six episodes that will be on Channel 4, every Monday at 9pm.

What happens in episode 1 of Rescue: Extreme Medics?

In the first episode, the Scottish Trauma Network leave Glasgow by helicopter as they head to a remote part of Skye.

The team are deployed to help rescue a man who is stuck under a 650kg all-terrain vehicle.

The Scottish Trauma Network will also visit rural Aberdeenshire after a 51-year-old cyclist has a head-on collision with a digger bucket.

The series follows the teams on the front line who ensure patients receive the life-saving care they need to survive.

What is the Scottish Trauma Network?

The Scottish Trauma Network is a network of hospitals, four major trauma centres and an integrated network of infrastructure.

The network was developed in 2016 after a commitment by the Cabinet Secretary for health and sport.

The four major trauma centres included in the network are in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow and aim to cover the surrounding four regions, North, East, South East and West.

The network works alongside the Scottish Ambulance Service to support the regions covered by the major trauma centres.

According to The Scottish Trauma Network around 4,000 people are seriously injured in Scotland each year.

Of those 4,000 it is believed 800-1,000 cases will be defined as ‘major trauma’.

It has also been estimated that there are around 100 cases of major trauma in children under 16 every year.

The Scottish Trauma Network works across five facets of trauma care including prevention, pre-hospital, acute, rehabilitation and major incident planning.

The aim of the network is ‘Saving lives and Giving life back’.
