Strictly Come Dancing 2021: week three results, who went home - and how did Katie McGlynn score?

Week three of Strictly Come Dancing saw the couples take to the dance floor in a variety of costumes and makeup to celebrate movie week.

Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu performed a couples choice routine inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice danced a Titanic inspired foxtrot and Tom Fletcher and Amy Dowden returned to the competition after missing last week’s show due to testing positive for Covid-19.

Who was voted off?

Actress Katie McGlynn and her partner Gorka Marquez became the second couple to be eliminated from the competition, following a dance off against comedian Judi Love and her partner Graziano Di Prima.

McGlynn and Love both were awarded an overall score of 24 following their performances on Saturday night.

The judges voted in favour of Love’s charleston to When You’re Good To Mama from movie-musical Chicago over McGlynn’s American smooth to Cruella De Vil from the latest 101 Dalmatians film Cruella.

Motsi Mabuse said: “I think this is getting tougher and tougher every year, it was so close, it was a really hard decision to take, but I am just going to go with the overall positive picture which was more dance intensive, so I am going to go with Judi and Graziano.”

Craig Revel Horwood added: “Well I think both couples did really well and improved in the dance-off itself, but there was one couple for me who shone brighter in the performance, and that is Judi and Graziano.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas also voted to save Love and Di Prima, after Anton Du Beke was the only judge who voted to keep McGlynn and Marquez for another week.

Following her elimination, McGlynn said: “I have absolutely loved my time, I am so happy I got to be Cruella and dance with this amazing guy, I have loved every second of it.

“Thank you for being an amazing partner, we have laughed so much, and I get to walk away with an amazing friend.

“Thanks so much for teaching me in your funny ways, we have had so much fun.”

Marquez added: “I have loved it, the love that she has for the show.

“I think talking for myself and all the pros, when we come to the show, it isn’t just about someone who can dance, it is someone who wants to learn, who wants to improve, and makes us love what we do, and makes our job enjoyable and easy.

“That’s what I had with Katie and I will never forget this experience, it’s been incredible.”

Despite being at the bottom of the leaderboard, Olympian Adam Peaty and his partner Katya Jones managed to avoid the dance off - however, the score a couple were given by the judges does not mean that they are doomed (or safe) from the dance off.

The BBC explains: “The Strictly Come Dancing scoring system combines judges and viewers’ votes.

“No couple is guaranteed to be safe on judges’ votes alone however, and the viewers’ votes can always influence the outcome. This means each week any couple can face or be saved from the dance off with the public vote.”

Ben Platt performed during the episode with a rendition of You Will Be Found from the musical Dear Evan Hansen, and the show opened with a routine by the Strictly professionals inspired by the musical In the Heights.

Nina Wadia and her partner Neil Jones became the first couple to leave the dancing competition last week.

Who is on top of the leaderboard?

It was John Whaite and his partner Johannes Radebe who topped the leaderboard after performing their paso doble inspired by Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean for movie week.

Judges Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas even gave the pair a standing ovation, and the two garnered praise across the panel.

Strictly professional turned judge Anton Du Beke said: “I’m a little overwhelmed really. I have to be honest with you, I thought it might be a bit camp, this number, but it was the best thing I’ve seen all night.

“You were so strong and believable and powerful, your jump was exquisite.”

Shirley Ballas added: “I haven’t seen anything like that. Thank you for closing our show with such a magnificent performance.”

Notoriously harsh judge Craig Revel Horwood even said he hadn’t “written a thing down” about the performance, meaning he had no notes or criticisms.

Whaite and Radebe were close to bagging a perfect score after being awarded 10s by Mabuse, Ballas and Du Beke, but unfortunately they came just short after being given a nine by Horwood.

However, a score of 39 isn’t something to turn your nose up at as it’s the highest score of the season so far, and it landed the two at the top of the leaderboard, closely followed by Rhys Stephenson and partner Nancy Xu, and Rose Ayling-Ellis and partner Giovanni Pernice.

Whaite and Radebe made history on Strictly Come Dancing as the first all-male partnership on the show.

How did Dan Walker score?

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker and his partner Nadiya Bychkova hit the dance floor with a Sleeping Beauty inspired foxtrot.

Unfortunately, the two found themselves at the bottom of the leaderboard in second last place with a score of 21, thanks to a misstep that threw Walker off halfway through the dance.

After their dance, Du Beke said: “I wanted to say “arise, Sir Dan”, but it went wrong.

“You were dancing quite elegantly, you’ve got a wonderful posture, your footwork is improving - but you went wrong… But it wasn’t a bad effort.”

Horwood was less forgiving, stating that Walker’s mistakes were “big mistakes, darling, they weren’t tiny ones”.

He added: “You’ve clearly lost your confidence, which is a shame. You need to learn how to get into these situations and rebuild the mood.”
