On 6 August 2005, audacious criminals stole R$160 million (roughly £23.7 million) from Fortaleza’s central bank in Brazil.

The gang of thieves tunnelled into the bank’s vault and removed more than 3 tons of R$50 notes.

It remains one of the biggest bank heists in history, and to date only one eighth of the stolen cash has been recovered.

At one point the crime made the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s greatest bank robbery.

What followed was a cat and mouse game between police and robbers over five years as the authorities desperately sought to recover the money and bring the criminals to justice.

Only eight people were initially arrested out of 25 who were suspected to be involved.

A new Netflix original documentary miniseries looks at how the heist was carried out, the authorities’ response and attempts to catch the criminals, and the bloody aftermath for many involved in the scheme.
