TikTok is no stranger to a viral trend, with the app becoming one of the most popular social media platforms, up alongside the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
With its growing popularity comes the creation of high profile accounts, with household names like Will Smith, Jason Derulo, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Billie Eilish and more getting in on the fun.
Most recently Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell broke the internet after they decided to try their hands at the latest TikTok challenge - The Grace Kelly trend.
What is the Grace Kelly trend?
The latest trend on social media platform TikTok sees users performing the 2007 Mika song Grace Kelly by recording themselves singing the different harmonies.
The lyrics of the song goes: “I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet sky, I could be hurtful, I could be purple, I could be anything you like.”
Singers repeat this section of the song again and again, harmonising with themselves.
Generally participants will start with the lowest note and then work their way up to the highest note, with some reaching the same note that Mika himself hits in the song.
What did Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell do?
Ryan Reynolds, who you might recognise from films like Deadpool, The Hitman’ Bodyguard and Free Guy, has his own TikTok account, @VancityReynolds, and decided to get in on the Grace Kelly trend.
He begins the TikTok video singing the lowest part of the song and slowly works his way up, until the video is gatecrashed by Will Ferrell (Elf, Anchorman).
Ferrell takes over singing the next two harmonies of the video before the two join forces and duet the highest notes together.
The TikTok currently has over six million likes, and over 73 thousand comments as well.
Reynolds also posted the video to his Instagram, writing: “Late to the Grace Kelly TikTok trend but WAY early for our Christmas movie musical.”
Mika, the singer of the song Grace Kelly, reposted Reynolds Instagram to his own account, writing: “I could be brown, I could be blue, I should get TikTok and do one of these too... Thanks @vancityreynolds and #WillFerrell you made my day!”
Why were Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell together?
Reynolds and Ferrell are currently filming a film together called Spirited, which is a modern musical reimagining of the Charles Dickens 1843 classic A Christmas Carol.
Reynold takes the lead as the protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge, whilst his co-star Ferrell will take on the film’s version of the Ghost of Christmas Present.
Also included in the cast is:
- Sunita Mani (GLOW, Mr. Robot)
- Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures, The Help)
- Marlow Barkley (Single Parents, Amphibia)
- Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown, The Morning Show)
Spencer is reportedly playing one of Reynolds “good-natured co-workers” and Mani is supposedly set to take on the role of Ghost of Christmas Past.
Sean Anders and John Morris, who are longtime collaborators, are set to write and direct Spirited. The two have worked together on projects like Daddy’s Home, Horrible Bosses 2 and Instant Family.
The film was announced back in September 2019, but has been pushed back due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Reynolds shared a first look at the film on 6 July 2021, tweeting an image of him and Ferrell together on screen.
He wrote: “Day 1 shooting with one of my comedy idols, Will Ferrell.”
The film is an Apple TV+ production, and a release date has yet to be confirmed.
