Professor Adam Finn an advisor on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), warned that a ‘third wave’ of coronavirus infection “is definitely under way”, and stressed the race is on between the vaccine rollout and the highly transmissible variant first identified in India. It is hoped the infections will be brought under control now that the jab rollout has extended to anyone aged 18 and over, but many parts of the country are currently seeing a rise in cases. Public Health England has warned that cases of the Delta Covid-19 variant have increased by 79 per cent in the space of a week, with infections most driven by younger age groups.
