Delta variant symptoms: 9 signs of Covid infection linked to the highly transmissible strain

Covid-19 cases are gradually starting to fall across much of the UK, suggesting the third wave of Covid-19, which began at the end of May, may have peaked.

However, despite the drop in cases, only 38.3 million people in the country have currently been fully vaccinated, meaning the risk of being infected is still high for the rest of the adult population still awaiting their second dose. The recent peak in infection has been fuelled primarily by the Delta Covid variant, first identified in India, which accounts for around 99 per cent of all new coronavirus cases in the UK.

The variant is believed to be up to 60 per cent more infectious than other strains and may be 46 per cent more likely to cause reinfection than the Alpha variant, first identified in Kent.

Recent figures from Public Health England (PHE) shows that the percentage of people infected with the Delta variant is much higher among people who are unvaccintated, but some people who had received both doses have fallen ill.

The Delta Covid mutation arrived in the country following a devastating outbreak in India and doctors treating coronavirus patients who have been infected have identified some unusual new symptoms. Listed are nine common signs of infection that have been associated with the strain.
