Despite the huge uptake across the country, many young people have still not had their first dose, prompting companies to offer rewards and incentives in a bid to boost jab rates among youngsters.
Some three in 10 young adults in England are yet to receive their first dose, while uptake is even lower in Northern Ireland. Wales continues to lead the way in first doses for young adults, with an estimated 75.4 per cent of 18 to 29-year-olds having had their first jab, while Scotland is just marginally behind on 73.5 per cent.
However, an estimated three million UK adults under the age of 30 still have not received any coronavirus vaccine.
The news comes as the vaccination programme extends to 16 and 17-year-olds in England, who will be offered their first dose by 23 August under a new target set by the Health Secretary.
By contrast, uptake is much higher in England among older 30 to 39 year-olds, with 81.2 per cent having received at least one dose, while among 40 to 49 year olds figures stand at 89.1 per cent. All other age groups are now above 90 per cent for first doses.
