Under 18 vaccine: the areas of England where the fewest teenagers are vaccinated ahead of back to school day
The summer holidays are almost over for teenagers in England and an increasing number will be heading back to the classroom with a Covid vaccine in their arm.
Despite more than 77% of the UK’s adult population now being vaccinated against coronavirus, the roll-out is still in the early stages for under-18s.
While Covid symptoms in children are largely asymptomatic or mild, vaccination opened for those aged 16 and 17 three weeks ago.
For kids aged 12 to 15, just those who are at higher risk from coronavirus or who live with someone who has a suppressed immune system are getting jabbed.
Across England, 521,192 under 18s had had at least one vaccine dose as of 22 August, according to NHS England figures, representing 13.7% of 12 to 17 year olds.
Of those, more than half (280,322) have been jabbed in the last three weeks. Just 6.3% of under 18s had been vaccinated as of 1 August.
But vaccination rates vary massively across the country.
In Allerdale, in Cumbria, more than a quarter (25.3%) have been jabbed. But in other areas, coverage is trailing at less than 3%.
Here we reveal which areas in England have the lowest proportion of under 18s vaccinated.
