Scotland areas with fewest double jabbed people amid calls to get second dose

Uptake has been extremely high in Scotland since the rollout began and has helped prevent a surge in hospitalisations and deaths.

But with the coronavirus infections rising dramatically in the country in recent weeks, with the spike attributed to the reopening of schools for the autumn term, ministers are now calling for those who are not fully protected to get their second dose.

The Scottish government has said around two thirds of new Covid-19 cases are among people aged under 40.

Over the last month, 30 per cent of coronavirus-related hospital admissions were also among the under 40s, while almost 60 per cent of hospitalisations among unvaccinated people were in this age group.

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf is now urging people to get their second dose and not “leave the job half done”, particularly as cases are rising.

He warned that the virus still poses a “significant threat” and both doses are needed to ensure maximum protection.

Drop-in and open-access clinics are now open across Scotland to make it as easy as possible for people to get vaccinated, with Mr Yousaf adding that “it’s not too late”.
