Covid cases: the UK areas with the biggest increase in coronavirus infections in the last week

Over seven million people in the UK have now tested positive for Covid-19 since the pandemic began — these are currently the worst affected areas.

More than 80% of the adult population in the UK is now fully vaccinated against Covid but infection rates are still rising across the country.

According to official figures published by the UK Government, 264, or 69%, of local authorities have seen a rise in infection rates per 100,000 of the population between 28th August and 3rd September. Just over 100 councils have seen a drop in infection rates for the same period.

Scotland has some of the worst infection rates in the whole of the UK with two of its councils topping the infection rate leaderboard.

Here we reveal the 20 councils which currently have the biggest increase in infection rates in the whole of the UK.

5. Carmarthenshire

Carmarthenshire recorded a positive case rate of 400.4 per 100,000 on 28th August and then a rate of 591.9 on 3rd September. This is a 48% increase. Photo: Shutterstock

6. West Berkshire

7. Eden
