How many Covid cases does Australia have?

In total, Australia has had 30,528 cases of Covid so far.

However, a recent Covid outbreak in Sydney linked to the highly contagious Delta variant has grown to 128 cases, with cases also recorded in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia

Australia has so far managed to keep Covid case numbers low with border closures and lockdowns, but officials now say it is a "critical time".

This is the first time in months that coronavirus cases have emerged in multiple parts of the country at the same time.

More than 7.5 million vaccines doses have now been administered in Australia.

What are the current lockdown restrictions?

In total, five of Australia's eight states and territories are currently fighting the Delta variant, after the first case was found in Sydney two weeks ago.

The situation is currently the most concerning in Sydney, where around five million residents are subject to a two-week stay-at-home order until 9 July.

The New South Wales (NSW) state government expanded a lockdown to cover all of Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong on Sunday (27 June).

Many businesses and venues have now been ordered to temporarily close.

The northern city of Darwin has extended its lockdown until Friday (2 July), and Perth has now begun a four-day lockdown, with a three-day shutdown imposed in Brisbane and some neighbouring regions from 29 June.

Restrictions such as mandatory masks and fewer gatherings are also in place across Australia.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said social distancing restrictions and other local measures are still in place across Australia, with a number of variations.

These are liable to change at short notice and you should monitor State and Territory websites for the latest information where you are and comply with these measures and other advice from local authorities.

You can also check restrictions on the Australian Department of Health’s COVID-19 Restriction Checker.

Measures may include:

- restrictions on numbers of people at most non-work gatherings, in shops, cafes, restaurants and other places of public gathering, and on visitors to private residences

- keeping at least 1.5 meters from others in public spaces

- restrictions on entering aged care homes

limits on local travel and advice to avoid public transport at peak hours

- face masks on public transport and in crowded areas where it is difficult to maintain a 1.5 metres physical distance from others.
