Covid: The 15 areas in England with the highest number of coronavirus reinfections

Until now, the country’s Covid cases data on the UK data dashboard has only counted infections in people who have never tested positive before

Covid reinfections in some parts of England have been found to be almost six times higher than other areas.

New government data showing how many coronavirus cases have been recorded in people who have had the virus previously has been made available for the first time for England on the UK Covid data dashboard.

Until now, the country’s Covid cases data has only counted infections in people who have never tested positive before.

The UK Health Security Agency is now counting each time a person gets infected as a new case, as long as the infections are at least 90 days apart.

However, the data shows a count of reinfections - not people reinfected.

For example, if a person has had Covid three times, with each case being 90 or more days apart, they will be counted twice in the reinfections data as they have been reinfected twice. They will be counted three times in the overall count of cases.

Burnley was found to have the highest rate of Covid reinfections, with 1,972.2 per 100,000 people as of 30 January 2022.

In comparison, North Norfolk was found to have a Covid reinfection rate almost six times lower than that of Burnley, with 348 reinfections per 100,000 people.

But which areas of England have the highest rate of Covid reinfections?

These are the 15 council areas which currently have the highest number of coronavirus reinfections according to the data.
