Some councils areas in the UK have seen a surge in Covid infections, with cases tripling in some parts

Covid cases are continuing to quickly rise in some areas of the UK amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

Across the UK there were 1,161,091 Covid cases in the seven-day period ending 31 December, a rate of 1,730.9 per 100,000 people.

That was up by 39% on the 838,001 cases recorded in the week to 24 December.

Fourteen areas of London, including Lambeth and Wandsworth, have seen a decline in Covid cases in the last week after a previous surge, while some council areas across the North and devolved nations are seeing big spikes.

Blaenau Gwent in Wales saw the fastest rise in the week to 31 December, with a percentage change of 267%, with Middlesbrough in Teesside also seeing a change of 213.3%.
