2022 Toyota Aygo X: all we know about the price and specifications for Toyota’s new city crossover

First details of all-new city car, including engine and performance announced ahead of 2022 launch date

Toyota has unveiled its all-new city car, the Aygo X, revealing a high-riding crossover with high levels of tech that the brand says will set a “new reference” for A-segment cars.

Due out in 2022, the Aygo X (pronounced “cross”) was designed in Europe specifically for European markets and unlike the previous generation, which was part of a joint project with Peugeot and Citroen, is “100% Toyota”.

Closely resembling the Aygo X Prologue concept revealed earlier this year, the new five-door model develops on the previous generation of Aygo with a taller, SUV-inspired design.

The familiar X-shaped design of the Aygo’s front and rear panels remains but the new model is chunkier and more aggressive, with echoes of the larger Yaris, with which it shares a platform.

Black body cladding runs around the wheel arches, bumpers and sills and extends up the rear three-quarter panel to give the car the more rugged crossover looks its designers wanted. LEDs front and rear give the car a sharp light signature.

At 3.7m long, the Aygo X is still a compact city car but is 24cm longer than the previous model and sits 5cm taller on standard 18-inch wheels.

Revealing the car, Andrea Carlucci, vice president of product at Toyota Europe was clear that the Aygo X is a crossover, but one designed for urban drivers who want a tall driving position but small footprint.

The Aygo X is also 12.5cm wider than before and offers enlarged passenger and luggage space, with the boot extended by 60 litres to 231 litres.

Interior design has been kept fairly simple but oversized air vents, instrument cowl and touchscreen surround bring a touch of character to the enlarged cabin.

Aygo X engine and performance

As with previous models, the Aygo X will come with just one engine.
