Kensington Palace is poised to open its largest exhibition in April called ‘Crown to Couture’, and many will agree it will be one that Bridgerton’s Lady Whistledown would find worthy to write about in her letters.

Since Netflix’s historical fiction-romance show first appeared while we were all enduring lockdown, the majestic grandeur and opulence of Georgian style has cemented itself in pop culture and everyday style.

Not only did retailers see an uptick in traffic for corsets following Bridgerton’s release, but also designers have since drawn influence from the Georgian era for red carpet glamour.

In light of this, the Historic Royal Palaces team have collected over 200 pieces to create an immersive journey around Kensington Palace to showcase ‘the power of the dress’ and to throw visitors into the ‘glittering world of the royal Georgia court’ where the first red carpet occurred.

Under the eye of Alexander McQueen’s production designer Joseph Bennet, fans will be able to see regency-inspired garments that have been worn by the likes of modern-day maidens as well as historical icons. PeopleWorld takes a look at some of the key moments:

The Georgian court at Kensington represented a place where one wanted to ‘see and be seen’, echoing that of Anna Wintour’s annual Met Gala.

Kensington Palace has pulled some of the most regal designs off the red carpet for their exhibition including Lizzo’s stunning Thom Browne gown and cape from last year’s event and Billy Porter’s ‘Sun God’ look from the 2019 Met Gala.

Other treasures showcased in the State Rooms of the Palace include outfits adorned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Lady Gaga’s bright green dress from the MTV Awards.

While these examples show how present-day fashion made for celebrity royalty is judged by social media and the press, the exhibition will compare how style has been scrutinised for over 300 years with the monarch once casting their ‘watchful’ eye over it.

Perhaps one of the crowning jewels of the exhibition is Charles II’s Silver Tissue Gown which he wore at the Georgian court - made from fine silk woven with silver thread.

The fashion gems will be available to see at the ‘Crown and Couture’ exhibition once it opens its doors on 5 April until 29 October 2023.
