The first Monday in May is the most prestigious night of the year. Fashion Royalty and A-list celebrities will flock to New York for Anna Wintour's Met Gala event. But it looks like the editor-in-chief is cracking down on the guest list with rumours that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may not make the list.

Anna’s annual fundraising gala will take place just five days before the King Charles’ Coronation and it could be the fallout with the Royal family that will keep the Duke and Duchess of Sussex off the guest list.

This year's exhibition theme is ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty', and we would very much like the Royals interruption.

There have been many Royals that have been invited since the fundraiser first began in 1948. Here are our favourite Royal Met Gala looks over the years.

Princes Diana - 1996 - Theme: Dior

Princess Diana wore a floor length navy silk dress with lace trim by Dior, a navy wrap and accessorised with a diamond sapphire choker and sapphire and diamond double-drop earrings. It was the last time the choker has been seen in public with Kate Middleton recently wearing the earrings to the Commonwealth Day Service. The Royal attended the gala with the late magazine editor Liz Tilberis.

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece - 2002 Theme: Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years

Princess Marie-Chanel wore a one sleeved Grecian style teal dress by Valentino. She let her dress do the talking and kept all other accessories down to a minimum.

Queen Rania of Jordan - 2016 - Theme In America: An Anthology of Fashion.

The glamorous Royal wore a black and white monochrome dress with swan-like feather detail and tulle skirt by designer Valentino.

Princess Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis attended the same year and wore a gold strapless mini dress with large black bow detail by Mary Katrantzou. Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece was spotted at the Met Gala after party wearing a silver dress from Balmain.

Princess Beatrice - 2018 Theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

The Princess wore a stunning long sleeve sheer purple dress by Alberta Ferretti. She kept her accessories minimal wearing gold sandals and a simple jewelled headband.
