A new study reveals which UK areas are most obsessed with biscuits, and Oxford takes the top spot, with 1,516 monthly Google searches for biscuit-related terms per 100,000 residents. Scottish city Edinburgh and Midlands city Birmingham round out the top three biscuit-hunting cities. Across the UK, traditional shortbread dominates national searches with 95,248 monthly Google queries.

A study released by premium appliance brand AEG has uncovered Britain's true biscuit hotspots, with Oxford taking the crown as the nation's most biscuit-obsessed city.

Researchers analysed average monthly Google searches across 78 UK cities to pinpoint where Brits show the greatest appetite for sweet treats.

Oxford residents searched for biscuit terms a staggering 1,16 times per 100,000 population every month on average, according to the data from Google Keyword Planner.

Scottish capital Edinburgh claimed second place with 1,166 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. The strong Scottish showing comes as little surprise given the heritage of shortbread, which dominated search rankings nationwide.

Birmingham secured the third spot with residents making 1,132 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. The Midlands city showed particular interest in shortbread, gingerbread, and Oreos, which topped their most-wanted list.

Cambridge registered the lowest interest in biscuits with just 198 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. This represents less than 15% of Oxford's search volume, highlighting a huge difference between the two historic university rivals.

Rotherham and Nottingham also showed surprisingly low biscuit interest, with 245 and 283 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, respectively. These figures stand noticeably below the national average of approximately 700 searches per 100,000 residents.

Gingerbread grabbed the second spot nationally with 58,714 monthly searches. The spicy favourite appeared in nearly every city's top three most-searched biscuits, showing its widespread appeal across Britain.

Biscoff secured third place with 30,666 monthly searches. The caramelised cookie has surged in popularity, especially in London, Manchester and Glasgow where it features prominently in search rankings.

American import Oreo landed fourth place with 30,138 monthly searches across Britain. The chocolate sandwich cookie performed exceptionally well in Birmingham, Leicester and Belfast, suggesting stronger appeal in urban areas than rural communities.

The chocolate-orange Jaffa Cake completed the top five with 29,004 monthly searches. Despite endless debate about whether it qualifies as a true biscuit, the McVitie's creation remains a firm favourite, particularly in Oxford, Plymouth and Portsmouth.

The UK's favourite biscuits:

Rank Biscuit Average Monthly Monthly Searches
1 Shortbread Biscuit 95,248

3 Biscoff 30,666
4 Oreo 30,138

The data revealed interesting regional patterns in biscuit preferences across Britain. While shortbread and gingerbread dominated nationwide, Yorkshire cities displayed unusual affection for Tea Cakes with this variety appearing in the top searches for Leeds, Huddersfield, Bradford and Wakefield.

A spokesperson for AEG said: "This research gives us a unique window into Britain's biscuit habits. The dominance of shortbread across all areas shows just how deeply certain biscuits have become part of our national identity. The regional quirks we found are fascinating, especially Yorkshire's clear preference for tea cakes.

"The massive gap between Oxford and Cambridge stands out the most. The two cities are constantly paired together, yet completely opposed in their biscuit enthusiasm. Oxford's position as Britain's biscuit capital gives them fresh ammunition in their centuries-old rivalry."
